Week of September 27

Students worked very hard in music class this week.  Read on to find out some of the highlights of the week!

Kindergarteners played a singing game where they each got to sing on their own.  They also did movement to the story Wiggle and Waggle, which reinforced high and low voices.

First graders did a folk dance called "Chimes of Dunkirk."  They also sang and performed "Deedle, Deedle, Dumpling" using Boomwhackers.

Second graders learned about Emily Bear, an eight-year old pianist and composer.  They watched a video clip of her performing two songs and then compared and contrasted these songs.  They also worked on sight-singing songs using sol and mi on the five-line staff.

Third graders learned about Franz Joseph Haydn's "Surprise Symphony."  They found out the reason he composed this song, and they played instruments with the song.  They also learned about Emily Bear, a pianist and composer who is their age and is from IL.

Fourth graders read the letter names for "Hop Old Squirrel" on the staff and then played this song on the xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels.  They also learned about sharps and flats this week.

Fifth graders learned about music from several more Native American tribes this week, including the Pawnee, Ute, and Navajo.  They compared and contrasted two Navajo songs that they particularly enjoyed.  They also reviewed notes with sharps and flats.
