This week, Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper’s afternoon class acted out a movement story called The Mice Go to the Zoo. They explored all different types of movement and differentiated between their high and low voices during this activity. Students in Ms. Waller’s class played a singing game. They also enjoyed exploring their high and low voices with a story called Wiggle and Waggle. Students in Ms. Tepper's morning class did not have music this week due to the early release on Thursday.
First graders experienced movement, vocal, and instrumental improvisation through a song called "Make a Sound." They really enjoyed using unpitched percussion instruments to create soundscapes to poems called "Autumn Leaves," "Weather Ways," and a book called Stanley Mows the Lawn. They also acted out Stanley Mows the Lawn.
Second graders learned about nine-year old pianist and composer Emily Bear this week. Learn more about Emily Bear here: http://www.emilybear.com/index2.html They also played a singing game and worked on sight singing and rhythmic and melodic dictation.
Third graders studied songs in three-four time this week, including Mozart's "Ein Kleine Nachtmusik," more commonly known as "A Little Night Music;" "Cielito Lindo;" and "Tititorea." They especially enjoyed playing the traditional Maori stick passing game that is used in New Zealand along with "Tititorea."
Fourth graders played and sang a song called "Hop Old Squirrel" on the xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels while reading the letter names of the notes on the staff. Three of the classes did a note name review worksheet in preparation for their note name quiz, which will be next week. 4M and 4St will take their quiz on Tuesday, and 4B will take their quiz on Wednesday. Students in 4Sil will review for their quiz on Monday, and their quiz will take place on Thursday. Any fourth grader who feels that they need extra practice before the quiz can come for an additional review on Monday at recess. Also, this is a helpful game for reviewing the names of the treble clef notes: http://www.classicsforkids.com/games/notename/notename.html
Fifth graders have experienced music from the Pawnee, Navajo, Ute, Sioux, Menominee, Zuni, Iroquois, Athabascan, and Comanche tribes so far through their Native American music unit. Students listened to many songs, learned the history behind the songs, danced traditional dances, and played instruments while singing some of the songs.
