Week of November 28

Students have been hard at work since coming back after Thanksgiving!  Keep reading to see what they've been up to!

This week, Kindergarteners in Ms. Waller's class sang a song called "Walk to School" at different speeds.  They also did creative movement to "Walking Song" from Acadian Songs and Dances to learn about simple form.  Students in Ms. Tepper's classes sang and moved to "One Finger, One Thumb."  They enjoyed coming up with creative ways to use their rhythm sticks in a song about playing sticks, too.

First and Second graders were excited to begin music for their Spring Sing this week!  Their concert is significantly earlier this year than concerts have been in previous years due to the availability of the Elm Place auditorium, so that's why they are beginning now.  This week, they began working on the first song in their concert.  All students received a lyrics sheet, so they can practice at home.

Third graders studied the Nutcracker March this week.  They determined that it is in rondo form, and they especially enjoyed performing movements with paper plates to show the way the different sections interacted.  They also watched a performance of this song from an actual version of the "Nutcracker."  They were surprised how well the ballet dancers could tell the story without speaking or singing.

Fourth graders began testing on "Hot Cross Buns" this week.  Overall, students are doing very well.  They also worked on the song for their yellow belts, "Gently Sleep."  They should be practicing this song if they earned their white belts.

Fifth graders began testing for their white belts this week by playing "Snake Charmer."  They also began learning to play the song they will play in order to earn their yellow belts, "Lion Sleeps Tonight."

On December 10, 1927, the first Grande Ole Opry radio broadcast took place in Nashville, Tennessee.  The Grand Ole Opry is broadcasted live at http://www.wsmonline.com/ if you are interested in tuning in!
