Week of February 6

Read on to find out a little bit about what your children learned in music this week!

This week, Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper’s classes sang a Valentine's Day song called "Valentine, Valentine."  They did a partner dance with this song and played a simple instrumental accompaniment on triangles.  Students in Ms. Waller’s class came up with ways to play the poem "Wee Willie Winkie" on xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels.  This reinforced that "low is left and long" on the Orff instruments.  This means that the lowest sounding bars are all the way to the left on the instruments, and those bars are the longest.

First and Second graders added more of the instrument and speaking parts to their concert music this week.  Several groups had recess rehearsals and now know their parts even better!  If your child has a dinosaur costume or costume piece that he plans to bring in, he should do so as soon as possible.

Third and fourth graders learned their second Spring Sing song this week.  They especially like this song because they use have to change their voices to express very different emotions in the song.  They learned the movements for the second song, too.

Fifth graders learned the second song for their concert this week.  They learned that it was a very popular song around the time of the 1929 Stock Market Crash, and they listened to a recording of Peggy Lee singing it and watched a clip with Doris Day singing the song in the movie "By the Light of the Silvery Moon."
