Week of November 26

It was fantastic to see many of you during conferences!  Thank you for stopping by.  I hope you had a great Thanksgiving holiday!

Kindergarteners sang and did movement to a song called "One Finger, One Thumb."  They discussed the difference between pitched and unpitched instruments, and then they used the unpitched percussion instruments to create a soundscape to a book called So-me at the Pole.  They used the different instruments to represent sounds in the story.

First graders focused on soundscapes this week.  They learned that soundscapes bring poems, stories, or works of art to life through the use of instruments.  They created soundscapes to two different poems about winter.  They read a book called Stanley Mows the Lawn and created another soundscape based on this story.  This book also taught them about pathways.  They learned that there are straight, curvy, and zig-zag pathways.  They applied some of these in a folk dance called "Shoemaker's Dance."

Second graders sang and did movement with a song called "See the Stars."  They then composed short accompaniments for this piece on the glockenspiels.  They also began learning about a process in which they will take part before winter break, where they will be recorded singing a song called "Rocky Mountain."  They will then assess their own recordings, I will assess the recordings, and we will set goals for them to work on.  Some students were a little bit nervous about the idea of making a recording, but others were very excited about the idea.  They will have lots of practice beforehand!

Third graders learned about ragtime music this week by listening to Scott Joplin's "The Entertainer."  They then did a composition study of Irving Berlin's "Alexander's Ragtime Band."  They learned about the life of Irving Berlin by watching an interview with his daughter.

Fourth graders learned their first full song on the recorder this week.  It is the song they will play in order to earn their white belts in Recorder Karate.  So far a few students in each class have earned their belts already!  The recorder music is available for download under the "Recorder Music" section of the blog, although the students do need a password in order to access it.  They have been given the password.

Fifth graders learned the song they will play in order to earn their white belts in Recorder Karate this week.  Students will need to work very hard on particular parts of this piece, especially the second half of each line.  Some students have earned their white belts already.
