Kindergarteners played a song called "Wee Willie Winkie" on the Orff instruments, which include the xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels. They practiced finding the highest and lowest notes on these instruments.
First and second graders were very excited to being working on the music for their Spring Sing this week! They learned to sing their first song, which is a Caribbean song. They also learned movement for this piece. They determined the form for this song and analyzed the dynamics of the music. Each student was given a lyric sheet in class, but they can always print another copy by going to the “Spring Sing Music” section of the blog and downloading an extra copy. Students have been given the password.
Third and fourth graders learned the second song for their Spring Sing this week. This song features the music of Mozart, so they continued their composer studies with Mozart. They also learned about three German composers who have songs featured in the speaking parts: Richard Strauss, J.S. Bach, and Felix Mendelssohn.
Fifth graders worked on the very complex movement for their third Spring Sing song this week. Each class does something completely different in this song, so it is imperative that they know their parts very well and are able to hold them no matter what else is going on around them. At this point, they should feel fairly confident with their first two songs. Students should be working on all three of their songs at home.
Music Activity of the Week
Chuck Vanderchuck's Classical Explosion is a fun website that your children may enjoy. This would be especially appropriate for students in 3rd-4th grade because it goes along well with the topic of their Spring Sing. It would also be good for students in 5th grade because it fits well with special guests who will be coming next week. Take a look here: http://pbskids.org/chuck/index.html#/classical
