Week of May 6

Keep reading to find out about some of the highlights from your child's music experiences this week!

This week, the Kindergarteners completed their Bearful Bear and His New Moves activities.  They went through every unpitched percussion instrument and decided what sounds from the story the instruments could play.  Each child then chose an instrument and played it when we got to that character's part in the story.  They really enjoyed the Bearful Bear activities!

First graders learned a folk dance called "Alabama Gal" this week.  They had a lot of fun with this!  This dance is performed in longways sets, but it is more complicated than "Chimes of Dunkirk," which they did earlier in the year.

Second graders learned a song called "Cut the Cake."  They played a game with this song that helped to reinforce locomotor and stationary movements.  They enjoyed this activity.

Third and fourth graders should have brought home a Spring Sing information sheet this week.  If you need an extra copy, it can be accessed under the "Important Dates" section of the blog or here:  3rd-4th Spring Sing Info  They are getting very excited about their concert.  They will have their full grade level rehearsals next week.

Fifth graders began African drumming this week.  They are using tubanos, djembes, and a gathering drum.  Mrs. Crutchfield also brought in her kpanlogo drum from home.  So far students have been leading one another in echo and question and answer songs.

Music Activity of the Week

Have a family dance night, and dance the night away!  Pick someone to be the DJ while the rest of the family dances.  The DJ should change the song every 30 seconds or so to see the dancers change their dance style.  Take turns being the DJ.  You could also plan ahead and create your own "evolution of dance."  For ideas, check out http://quietube6.com/v.php/http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dMH0bHeiRNg
