We had another great week in the Music Room. Read on to learn about some of the highlights!
Kindergarteners finished their The Very Lonely Firefly activities by playing singing the firefly song and playing the triangles, finger cymbals, tone chimes, and tom tom drums with the story. They acted out the part of the fireflies, too. They also continued working on reading rhythms using quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests.
First graders did self-assessments of their performances for the first song in The Little Red Hen. They then analyzed the other three characters in the story and discussed important character traits for each character. In groups, they used these traits to write lyrics for short theme songs for each character. Each group then decided on pitches and rhythms to use for their composition. They read the story once more at the end of the week, but this time they played each character's theme song any time the character performed certain actions. They did a great job with their compositions!
Second graders did self-assessments of last week's "Ducks in a Millpond" performances. They were then recorded singing the song individually for a singing assessment. Next week they will grade their own recordings and set a singing goal to work on for the rest of the year. They also began researching George Frideric Handel this week.
Third graders began African Drumming this week. They learned the names of each type of drum and how to play each one. They began playing the instruments using some simple question and answer phrases.
Fourth graders also began African Drumming this week. They started learning a drumming ensemble and will add to it next week. They really enjoy drumming!
Fifth graders are doing a fantastic job playing their recorders. Many students have already earned their white, yellow, and orange belts. They are working very hard on this music!
