Week of August 25

We had a fantastic first full week of school.  If you have not already subscribed to this blog, I encourage you to do so.  It will be updated at least every week in order to communicate important updates from the music room.  Keep reading to find out what your students learned in Music this week!  Also, please note the informance, concert, and Spring Sing dates that are included below.  They can also be found on the "Important Dates" section of this blog.

Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper's morning class had their first day of Music this week.  They went over the ROAR expectations for the music setting and learned a name song.  Students in Ms. Tepper's afternoon class read a story featuring a character called "So-me," who will come back throughout their time in Kindergarten.  This character helped them learn their first two pitches:  sol and mi.  They also sang a song that helped them differentiate between their high and low voices.

First graders composed movements and played unpitched percussion instruments with a song called "Hi, New Friends."  They then began a song called "Vacation Fun."  They used this song to begin composing.  Students took the original lyrics and changed them to reflect what they did over the summer.  You should have received a note this week about the first grade informances, which will take place on November 17 and 18.  An informance is a chance for parents to come be a part of the regular music class to see what kinds of things typically take place.  If you are able to come, we would love to have you, but if you are unable, do not feel pressured.  Mrs. Markoff's informance will be on Monday, November 17 from 1:10-1:40.  Mrs. Lasko's informance will be on Monday, November 17 from 1:40-2:10.  Ms. Janowiak's informance will be on Tuesday, November 18 from 1:10-1:40.  Please contact Mrs. Crutchfield with any questions.

Second graders learned a name song this week.  They also focused on dynamics, including pianissimo (pp); piano (p); mezzo piano (mp); mezzo forte (mf); forte (f); fortissimo (f); crescendo; and decrescendo.  They played a singing game to work on these dynamics, and they did a rhythmic dictation activity using quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests.  You should have received a note this week about the second grade informances, which will take place on Thursday, November 20.  An informance is a chance for parents to come be a part of the regular music class to see what kinds of things typically take place.  If you are able to come, we would love to have you, but if you are unable, do not feel pressured.  Mr. Meekof's informance will be from 10:50-11:20, Ms. Polakoff's informance will be from 11:20-11:50, and Mrs. Elman's informance will be from 2:10-2:40 on November 20.  Please contact Mrs. Crutchfield with any questions.

Third graders performed a 4-part canon this week.  They focused on being able to hold their own parts, even while other groups were singing at a different time.  The third and fourth grade Spring Sing has been scheduled!  It will be on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Elm Place Middle School at 7:00pm.  Please contact Mrs. Crutchfield with any questions.

Fourth graders performed a partner song in three parts this week.  They worked on holding their own parts, no matter what the people around them were doing.  They also composed movements for their sections and taught the movements to their classmates.  The third and fourth grade Spring Sing has been scheduled!  It will be on Wednesday, May 6, 2015 at Elm Place Middle School at 7:00pm.  Please contact Mrs. Crutchfield with any questions.

Fifth graders began learning a Hebrew song this week.  They learned an Israeli dance with the song, which they will be performing in a canon.  It is a very catchy song, so you may hear them practicing at home!  You should have received a note this week regarding the fifth grade concert in December.  It will take place at Wayne Thomas on Wednesday, December 10 at 7:00pm.  All of their music is available for them to access on the "Concert Music" section of this blog.  Please contact Mrs. Crutchfield with any questions.
