Week of January 11

Keep reading to learn about some of the highlights from your child's Music class this week.

Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper's afternoon class had a shortened music class due to the early release and a performance by the Northwood band and orchestra.  They continued identifying forte and piano sounds and practiced playing instruments at both of these dynamic levels.  Students in Ms. Tepper's morning class did not have music due to the early release.

First graders worked on finding their light singing voices this week.  They also began their instrument family unit by learning about the brass family.  The four main brass instruments are trumpet, French horn, trombone, and tuba.  As we progress through the instrument unit, one of the websites we will be using in class is the San Francisco Symphony for Kids site, which may be accessed here.

Second graders played a singing game with a song called "Miss Sue."  They worked on meeting their singing goals by doing this activity.  They also began learning a song about pizza.

Third graders sang a song called "Dance for the Nations."  They learned a folk dance for this song and performed it in a three-part canon.  Each student was recorded singing this piece, and next week they will be setting goals based on their recordings.

Fourth graders continued working on their recorder music this week.  They are progressing nicely and will be concluding this unit in the next couple of weeks.

Fifth graders worked on a body percussion composition this week.  Students worked in groups to compose a piece of music using body percussion.  They may make the song as simple or as complex as they choose.  Most groups have chosen to make their songs quite long and complicated.  They are doing a great job with this activity so far!
