Week of February 22

Read on to learn about some of the highlights from your child's Music class this week!

Kindergarteners continued their work with "Engine, Engine Number Nine" this week.  They used the gathering drum and egg shakers to demonstrate their understanding of the difference between the rhythm and the steady beat.  They also identified the rhythm and the beat in several songs learned earlier in the school year.

First graders watched "Peter and the Wolf," composed by Sergei Prokofiev.  They really enjoyed this movie and did a nice job identifying the different instruments that played the musical themes for each character.

Second graders focused on sight-reading pentatonic pitches on the treble clef staff this week.  They played a game called "Red Rover," where they sang a song and and each student took a turn identifying a pentatonic pitch on the staff.

Third and fourth graders continued working on their concert music this week.  They learned their fourth song, which is called "Fast Food Tango."  They should have their first four songs memorized with the movements.

Fifth graders continued their recorder unit this week.  Some students are working incredibly hard and soaring ahead.  Some students keep forgetting to practice at home, so they are struggling a bit more.  Please remind your fifth graders that they should be practicing their recorder music for 5-10 minutes each night.
