Week of September 12

4th & 5th Grade recorder orders are due this coming Monday, 9/19!  ALL 4th graders need to return the order form.  Only those 5th graders ordering new instruments need to turn in a form.

Kindergarteners read a book called Happy Birthday Moon this week.  They discovered that there was an echo in the story.  They then sang an echo song and shared creative movements that they could perform with this song.  They also played egg shakers and hand drums with the song.

First graders sang a welcome song and performed a partner dance while singing.  They also sang a song called "Lucy Locket" and played a singing game with it.

Second graders played rhythm sticks, hand drums, and sand blocks to a new song this week.  They focused on holding their own part while the other people near them were doing something different.  They performed the rhythm, steady beat, and a body percussion ostinato.  (An ostinato is a repeated rhythm or melody.)

Third graders sang an American folk song this week and accompanied their singing with Boomwhackers and sand blocks.  They spent some time reviewing the Orff instruments, and they will be using these instruments for accompaniment next week.

Fourth graders sang a folk song from Tennessee this week called "Cotton-Eye Joe."  They worked in groups to compose movements depicting the story in their verse.  They will be teaching their classmates their groups' movements next week!

Fifth graders learned a Maori song from New Zealand this week.  They learned a traditional tititorea stick game to go with this piece.  They enjoyed this activity!  5th graders will begin a sticker contest next week.  Each class can earn two stickers per class period.  They can earn one sticker for being prepared for class by practicing their songs at home.  The other sticker can be earned by participating and trying their best during music.  The contest will end around the time of their December concert.  The winning class will earn a choice day during music!
