Week of March 14

Arts in Action is one week from today!! Students in grades 1-5 will attend three different sessions.  Kindergarten students will attend one session.  All students selected their sessions last week.  There are a variety of options, and we hope this event shows kids that the arts (music, dance, drama, and art) take place in a variety of forms, and they occur in places other than just the music and art classrooms at school.

Feel free to stop by during conferences if you'd like to discuss your child's progress in music, or if you'd just like to say hi!  I will be available from 4-8pm on Wednesday, 12-8pm on Thursday, and 8am-noon on Friday.

This week, Kindergarteners in the morning class created movements to show the form of “Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.”  They listened to a song called “Star and Starfish” and used creative movement to show the high and low sounds in the song.  Students in the afternoon class did not have music due to conferences.

First and Second graders really enjoyed beginning their fifth Spring Sing song this week.  This song is a rap song, and they are really enjoying it!

Third and Fourth graders learned learned movement for their jazz song this week.  Some of the fourth graders have made short videos using their Spring Sing songs.  I have posted these clips in the "Spring Sing Music" section of the blog in case you'd like to take a look!

Fifth graders learned about composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz this week.  They were surprised to learn that in addition to writing the extremely well-known music for "Wicked," he also wrote the lyrics for "Pocahontas," and the music for "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," and "The Prince of Egypt."
