Week of March 21

I hope you have all had a fantastic Spring Break!  Here is a look back at what students learned in music during the week before break.  (For more information about Arts in Action, which took place on Wednesday, March 23, see the previous post or http://triblocal.com/highland-park-highwood/community/stories/2011/03/ground-breaking-inagural-event-wayne-thomas-first-fine-arts-festival/)

This week, Kindergarteners enjoyed playing part of "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star" on xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels.  They learned how to determine which notes on a xylophone would sound high, and which would sound low.

First and Second graders began learning their sixth Spring Sing song this week.  This song is about friendship, and many of the students enjoy singing it while thinking about their own friends. They also began to practice their pieces while performing on risers.

Third and Fourth graders learned their seventh Spring Sing song, a ballad, this week.  They also found out their positions on the risers and began practicing in these places.  Take a look at the "Spring Sing Music" section of the blog if you'd like to see some of the videos students have submitted.  They have been practicing their Spring Sing songs in very creative ways!

Fifth graders continued to work with Matt and Mike from the Music Institute of Chicago to write their own mini-musical.  They are working hard on their show about explorers.  This world premiere performance is coming up in just a couple of weeks!
