Welcome back! 2012 is off to a great start here at Wayne Thomas!
We are looking for volunteers with experience in any area of the arts to lead sessions for our Arts in Action afternoon on Thursday, March 22. If you are a musician, singer, song writer, painter, sculptor, jewelry designer, mosaic artist, wood worker, graphic designer, cartoonist, dancer, scrap-booker, or any other creative arts type of person we can use your help! If you are interested or know of anyone else who might be, please email me at ecrutchfield@nssd112.org.
This week, Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper's classes talked about loud and soft sounds that they find in the world outside of school and in music. They worked on differentiating between loud and soft in "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt," a song which many students still had stuck in their heads when they left the classroom! Students in Ms. Waller's class did not have music because there was no school on Monday.
First and Second graders spent this week reviewing their first three Spring Sing songs and the important concepts pulled from these songs. They are close to having their first two songs completely memorized, and they are working on memorizing their third song. They continue to work on being able to hold their own parts when they hear someone else singing a different part.
Third graders read a Robert Louis Stevenson poem called "The Land of Nod" and created a soundscape from it. They analyzed the poem and learned about text painting in music. They brought the poem to life by adding seventeen different instruments to the poem at particular points. They really enjoyed this activity!
Fourth graders analyzed the green belt recorder song, "It's Raining," this week in order to find patterns. Many students have had a hard time with this song, but after analyzing the piece instead of just playing it over and over like many students do when they practice, they really got the hang of it! They went through the same process with the purple belt song, "Old MacDonald."
Fifth graders were struggling with the song for their orange belts on their recorders, so they broke the piece down into sections, and, like the fourth graders, found patterns in this song. They have really worked hard on this song!
