Week of January 9

If you or someone you know has experience in any area of the arts, Wayne Thomas needs you!! We are looking for volunteers to lead sessions for our Arts in Action afternoon on Thursday, March 22.  If you are interested or know of anyone else who might be, please email me at ecrutchfield@nssd112.org.

This week, Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper's classes listened to a story called So-me in Space, which introduced them to quarter notes.  They learned quarter notes and quarter rests.  They also sang and moved to a song called "Tap Your Shoulders."  Students in Ms. Waller's class talked about loud and soft sounds that they find both in music and outside of school.  They worked on differentiating between loud and soft in “John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt."

First and Second graders learned their fourth song for their Spring Sing this week.  This is a country song, so they talked about country music.  They learned that the movement for this song is based on steps taken from many popular line dances and even some square dances.  They are doing a great job with their music so far, and they seem to be having a lot of fun in the process.

Third graders learned two new notes this week.  They learned the dotted quarter note and the single eighth note.  Students continue to discover new ways that music uses math!  This week they worked with fractions as they learned exactly what the dot in the dotted quarter note does.  They also began applying these new notes in a song called "Dance for the Nations."

Fourth graders made great progress this week!  Most students are working on the songs for their green or purple belts.  Some students have begun to work on the songs they will play in order to earn their blue belts.  This is a much more difficult song that uses two new notes, high C and high D, and incorporates ties.

Fifth graders did a nice job this week.  Most students are working on the songs they will play in order to earn their orange or green belts.  Some students are working on their purple and blue belts.

Music Fact of the Week

Benjamin Franklin, one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, was born January 17, 1706.  Did you know that he invented an instrument called the glass armonica?  Learn about this fascinating instrument and watch videos of it being played:  http://www.glassarmonica.com/
