Week of September 3

Mark your calendars with the date for the 5th Grade Winter Concert!  Instead of a "Spring Sing" this year, the 5th graders will perform a concert on Wednesday, December 11 at 7pm at Wayne Thomas.  (They will have a rehearsal on Monday, December 9 for Wayne Thomas students and staff members.)

Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper's morning class read a story called So-me Goes Missing, which helped them learn their first two pitches: sol and mi.  "Sol" sounds higher than "mi."  They also learned the "Good Day Song" and identified high and low sounding animals.  Students in Ms. Tepper's afternoon class did not have music because there was no school on Thursday.

First graders sang a song called “Vacation Fun.”  They brainstormed ideas to rewrite the lyrics of the song so that the song was about things that they did during their vacations or weekends.

Second graders reviewed quarter notes, eighth notes, and quarter rests in a song called "Closet Key."  They enjoyed using different dynamic levels in a singing game with this song.

Third graders began singing a song called "Laugh, Ha, Ha."  They performed it in a three-part canon, and are working toward singing it in four parts next week.

Fourth graders did a team-building activity this week.  They also began learning a folk dance.  One of the things that makes this particular folk dance interesting is that they provide the music for the dance instead of dancing to a recording.  You will be receiving a recorder order form at Curriculum Night on Thursday, 9/12.  Each student is asked to have two recorders.  One stays at home, and the other is for school.  Please watch for the recorder order form on Thursday evening.  They may be turned in from Thursday night until Monday, 9/23.

Fifth graders created movements for their three-part song this week.  They will be beginning their concert music soon.  A large majority of students seem very excited about the change to a December performance.  Please make note of the concert on 12/11!  Also, fifth graders should be checking to make sure they know where their home recorders are.  If they need to order a new recorder or two, they may pick up recorder order forms next week during music.  Forms are due on Monday, 9/23.
