Week of October 21

One of students' favorite songs around Halloween is called the "Igor."  This is a song that is used in music class this time of year, and many students have requested to know how they can download it.  It is available to purchase for $0.99 here if you are interested:  http://www.musick8kids.com/kidtunes/detail.php?sku=137027#.Umqs9ZTF2Vs

Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper’s classes read a book called If You're a Monster and You Know It and did movement to a song of the same name.  They brought the story to life by choosing unpitched percussion instruments that sounded like the monster's actions.  They enjoyed this activity.

First graders did a folk dance called "Chimes of Dunkirk" this week.  This was challenging at first, but they ended up doing a great job and really enjoying themselves.  They also played the Orff instruments and worked on rhythmic and melodic dictation with a couple of Halloween songs.

Second graders sang several songs in minor keys this week to get in the Halloween spirit.  They focused on rhythmic and melodic dictation, creative movement, sight-reading, and form.

Third graders completed their creative music notation projects this week and many students performed for the class.  They also performed a song called "Halloween Rondo," which helped them to learn about rondo form.  They created a soundscape with this piece, bringing the text to life by using unpitched percussion instruments.

Fourth graders all now have their recorders and have begun playing them.  They should be practicing the fingerings for B, A, and G at home, although they do not need to blow into the instrument in order to do this at this point.

Fifth graders began learning the singing and movement for their final concert song.  They really like this song!  In the performance, three songs will have dances performed by just one class at a time.  All classes learned all dances, but due to space constraints, one class will do movements for each of these three.  Students voted this week on which dance they wanted their class to do, and they found out which they will be performing.
