See the "Important Dates" section of this blog for information about Arts in Action, the 1st and 2nd grade Informances, the 3rd-4th grade Spring Sing, and the 5th grade concert!
Kindergarteners did a creative movement activity using movement scarves. This helped them focus on how they should move in different ways to different types of music. They also continued to work on the concept of echo songs.
First graders played the Orff instruments this week. These instruments include xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels. They used several nursery rhymes to teach the concept of low and high pitches on the instruments. They also read a book called Mortimer and figured out how to play it on their instruments.
Second graders finished composing the tunes for "Peas Porridge Hot." They learned a "B" section for the song, and each class determined what they wanted the form of the song to be. They were then recorded performing it. They will do a self-assessment with this next week.
Third graders put together an ensemble of two parts on xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels; two boomwhacker parts; and a sand block part for "Down at the Station." They really enjoyed playing each instrument part and seeing how the parts interacted.
Fourth graders learned how to read the letter names of the notes on the treble clef staff this week. They also learned a fall song and played a game with it. They will play it on the Orff instruments next week.
Fifth graders began learning a German folk song this week. They learned a traditional Bavarian dance to go with this song, which is often performed at the Oktoberfest celebration in Bavaria. They did a nice job with this activity!
