Week of October 7

If you have recommendations for people who would be great workshop leaders for Arts in Action, please contact Mrs. Crutchfield at ecrutchfield@nssd112.org!

Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper's morning class read a story called So-Me Meets the Boss, which helped them feel more comfortable singing alone.  They then played a singing game in which every student sang alone and played instruments.  Students in Ms. Tepper's afternoon class had a very short class due to the author visit.  They focused on steady beat and echo activities.

First graders continued their work on the Orff instruments this week.  In addition to instrument exploration activities, they also sang and played a couple of songs with specific instrument parts and focused on the concept of improvisation.  They improvised using their voices, bodies, and instruments this week.

Second graders watched their "Peas Porridge Hot" videos and did self-assessments of their performances.  They also did rhythmic and melodic dictation activities and studied Haydn's "Surprise Symphony."

Third graders learned about early music notation this week.  They looked at some of the earliest music ever written and figured out what the composers were trying to convey to the musicians through the written notation.  They then began thinking about how they would have written the music notation system if they had designed it.  They will continue working with their creative music notation systems next week and perform their short compositions.

Fourth graders continued reviewing the letter names of the notes on the treble clef staff.  They performed a fall song on the Orff instruments, too.  They will have a quiz on the letter names of the notes on Tuesday.  They did a review sheet in class at the end of this week.  This sheet is their study guide.  The following website has a great game to review the note names:  http://www.classicsforkids.com/games/notename/notename.html

Fifth graders learned a Portuguese song from Brazil this week.  They danced the samba with this song, as well.  They seem to really enjoy their world music for their December concert.  They are doing a fantastic job!

Enjoy the long weekend!
