Week of November 4

Students have been working hard this week in music.  Read on to learn more!

Kindergarteners read a story called Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb and played rhythm sticks and hand drums with the part of the book that repeated over and over.  This helped them focus on controlling when to play and when to have their instruments rest.  They also learned about the 4 voices: singing, speaking, whispering, and calling.

First graders read a story called Stanley Mows the Lawn and created a soundscape with this book.  They brought the book to life by acting out the story and using unpitched percussion instruments to create the sounds that were heard in the story.  They also studied Carl Orff's cantata, "Carmina Burana."  They really liked this song!

Second graders learned about a girl who is about their age named Emily Bear.  She is a piano prodigy and has composed over 300 songs.  They really liked watching her play the piano and learning about her amazing talent.  They also focused on their sight-reading skills.

Third graders studied Mozart's "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik" ("A Little Night Music") this week.  They worked on conducting in 3-4 time and did some basic movement with the song.  They compared and contrasted it to the Mexican Folk Song, "Cielito Lindo," which is also in 3-4 time.

Fourth graders began testing for their white belts by playing "Hot Cross Buns" this week.  Some students were ready to test this week, and some were not.  All of their recorder music is available under the "recorder music" tab on the left side of the blog.  They need a password to access it, but students have been given it.

Fifth graders continued working on putting their songs together with singing and movements this week.  They also filled out a questionnaire, choosing which parts they would like to perform in the December concert.  Many students continued working to write the script this week at recess!  They are all doing a fantastic job working on this concert!

Have a fantastic Veteran's Day Weekend!
