Please feel free to contact me at any point during the school year if you have any questions about anything pertaining to your child's experience in music: ecrutchfield@nssd112.org. I am always here to help! Keep reading to find out about what your child learned in music this week!
Kindergarteners continued focusing on the 4 voices by singing, whispering, speaking, and calling a fall song. They were very excited to play the Orff instruments this week! They worked on echoing and finding the highest and lowest notes on the instrument.
First graders performed a folk dance called the "Shoemaker's Dance." This dance was in ABC form. They created two nature poem soundscapes, which they did by analyzing the texts and bringing them to life by playing unpitched percussion instruments to replicate the sounds created in the poems. They also composed short songs using the the rhythms of things for which they are thankful.
Second graders sight-sang several passages that they discovered came from a song called "Children's Dance," in Howard Hanson's opera, "Merry Mount." They created movements to depict the sections they sang. They then examined a painting called "Children's Games" by Pieter Bruegel, which they used to create rhythms that they included in short compositions.
Third graders studied a song from the Maori people of New Zealand this week. This song is used to play a stick game in New Zealand called "tititorea," so students played a version of this game along with the song. They enjoyed this activity!
Fourth graders have all earned their white belts in the recorder unit! Some students have already earned their yellow belts, as well. Whatever belt your child is working toward currently, he should be practicing at home at least a few minutes each night. They are doing a great job so far!
Fifth graders completed their script this week during recess time. Mrs. Smith's class found out their parts, and the other two classes will learn their parts next week. They have been hard at work in preparation for their concert and should be practicing all songs every night, focusing mainly on the parts they find the most challenging (not necessarily their favorite parts!) Many groups will be practicing during recess next week.
