Week of September 8

This was our first week of Chorus, and the students are off to a great start!  If your child is enrolled in Chorus, please feel free to take a look at the Chorus section of this blog for more information.  Keep reading to learn about some of the highlights from your child's music class this week!

Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper's afternoon class read a book called Happy Birthday Moon, which helped them learn about echos.  They then sang an echo song called "Time for Music."  Students in Ms. Tepper's afternoon class did not have music this week due to Friday's early release schedule.

First graders played a singing game that helped them match pitch and keep the steady beat.  They also sang a song called "Bounce High," which taught them about tempo and accent marks.

Second graders played unpitched percussion instruments with a spoken song this week.  They worked on holding their own parts, no matter what the other groups were doing around them.  They began to learn the first and last names of the Orff instruments, as well.

Third graders played Boomwhackers and sand blocks to accompany one of their songs this week.  They reviewed the pentatonic scale and the names of each Orff instrument, as well.

Fourth graders sang and danced a song called "Down the River."  They also began talking about the recorder unit.  Parents of fourth grade students will pick up the recorder order forms at Curriculum Night next Thursday evening.  If you are unable to attend, the information will be sent home on Friday.  All fourth graders must turn in this form by Monday, September 29.  Please contact Mrs. Crutchfield with any questions.

Fifth graders continued singing and learning movement for their Scandinavian piece.  They should be working on memorizing this piece at home.  They also discussed the fifth grade recorder unit.  Any student who needs to purchase a recorder or two for this unit will have the opportunity beginning next week.  Students who need additional recorders will be given the order forms next week.  These forms are due on Monday, September 29.  Please contact Mrs. Crutchfield with any questions.
