Week of October 20

Keep reading to learn about some of the highlights from your child's music class this week!

Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper's morning class sang a Halloween song and played a singing game.  Each student also sang a solo along with the story 5 Little Pumpkins.  Students in Ms. Tepper's afternoon class read a book called If You're A Monster and You Know It.  They created a soundscape using unpitched percussion instruments to bring the story to life.

First graders started learning a folk dance called "Chimes of Dunkirk."  If you are able to come to your child's Informance in November, you just might get a chance to see this folk dance in action!  The Informance schedule is as follows:  1M - Monday, 11/17 from 1:10-1:40; 1L - Monday, 11/17 from 1:40-2:10; 1J - Tuesday, 11/17 from 1:10-1:40.  We would love to have you join us for this event if you are able to!

Second graders did a rhythmic and melodic dictation activity using a Halloween song.  They also performed the hand jive and practiced reading a musical score.  The second grade Informances are coming up on Thursday, November 20:  2M - 10:50-11:20; 2P - 11:20-11:50; 2E - 2:10-2:40.  If you are able to join us for this event, we would love to have you!

Third graders continued their study of early music notation this week.  They finished creating their own systems of written music notation, and many students presented their ideas to the class.  They also began to learn about rondo form and created a soundscape using unpitched percussion instruments to bring a Halloween poem to life.

Fourth graders in Mr. Bush's class and Mrs. Munson's class took their note name quiz this week.  Students in Mrs. Silberman's class have their quiz on Monday morning.  Students in Mr. Bush's class and Mrs. Silberman's class were very excited to get their recorders.  Students in Mrs. Munson's class will get their recorders on Monday afternoon.  They are really looking forward to beginning the recorder unit!

Fifth graders in Mrs. Smith's class and Mr. Wietzema's class learned an African song this week.  They are doing a great job with this music!  Students in Mr. Bartel's class worked on their Italian piece during music.  They will learn the African song next week.  All students should be practicing their concert music at home.  Next week, students who are interested in helping to write the script for their concert will be able to come in during recess to begin the process!
