Week of December 1

Keep reading to find out about some of the highlights from this week's music classes.

Kindergarteners began learning a song called "The Snowman" this week.  They came up with a list of directions for how to make a snowman, and they then compared their list to the lyrics of the song.  They discovered that the pitches in this song move from low to high to low.  They will do more work with this piece next week.

First graders created a soundscape using the story Stanley Mows the Lawn.  They acted out the different parts of the story and used unpitched percussion instruments to bring the book to life.  They also performed a folk dance called "Shoemaker's Dance."

Second graders learned about Emily Bear, a composer and pianist who is just a little bit older than them.  They watched a performance of her playing her songs on the piano and were amazed that someone so young could play so well.  They also worked on sight-singing this week.

Third graders read a story called Barn Dance, where the author used the text to create a song-like feel for the story.  They then analyzed a piece called "Square Dance 101" and will soon be learning some simple square dance movements to go with this song.

Fourth graders are doing a great job with their recorder unit.  Most students have earned their first belt for successfully playing the white belt song.  Most fourth graders are currently working on their second song, which uses the same pitches in a different order.

Fifth graders had their full fifth grade rehearsal for their winter concert this week.  They did a nice job singing, dancing, playing instruments, and doing their speaking parts.  Their concert is next week.  They will perform for the school on Monday and for their friends and family members on Wednesday evening.  Both events will be at Wayne Thomas.  If you are unable to attend the Wednesday evening concert and would like to attend Monday's assembly instead, please email Mrs. Crutchfield as soon as possible.

Students were very excited to visit the Wayne Thomas Book Fair this week!
