Week of December 8

Please see the following message from Mrs. Deely:

Dear Wayne Thomas Parents,
Mrs. Crutchfield and her husband, Jeff, are expecting their first child. Her due date is January 6,  2015. We wish her and her husband good luck as they enter this new phase of their lives. She plans to work until the baby arrives. As we all know, due dates are not exact. With that in mind, I would like to introduce Mrs. Nancy Berg. Mrs. Berg will begin as the long-term substitute on January 9, 2015. Mrs. Freeman will be available to teach music on January 6, 7, and 8, if needed.

Mrs. Berg received a Bachelor of Music Education from Case Western Reserve University/Cleveland Institute of Music. She has taught music for over 25 years. Mrs. Berg has worked in several long term substitute positions in District 112. Most recently, she was the choral director and general music teacher at Northwood.

Mrs. Berg is the strongest match for this class and a teacher who will continue to provide excellent service to our children.  She has shadowed Mrs. Crutchfield at Wayne Thomas during the last few months to get to know the children, school, and curriculum.
As always, your child’s learning and comfort remains our highest priority. Mrs. Berg will work hard to help them learn and continue to grow musically.
Please feel free to contact Mrs. Crutchfield or me with any concerns or questions.  We will be happy to assist you.
Sincerely,

Maureen Deely Emily Crutchfield

Keep reading to find out what  your child learned in music this week!

Kindergarteners composed movements to the snowman song they started last week.  They used tone bells to play the high to low pitches.  They did a great job with this activity!

First graders used unpitched percussion instruments to create soundscapes with two winter poems.  They also focused on using their light singing voices instead of their speaking voices.  Singing several bird-themed songs helped them find their light voices.

Second graders sang a folk song called "Rocky Mountain" this week.  Each second grader was recorded performing this song individually, and next week they will self-assess their recordings.  They will then conference with Mrs. Crutchfield to determine a singing goal to work toward for the next term.

Third graders performed a simple square dance with a song called "Square Dance 101."  They also began learning about Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker March."  They are doing a movement activity that helps them focus on the form of the piece.  They will complete this activity next week.

Fourth graders continued working on their recorder music this week.  They learned a new note, E, which is quite challenging for them.  This is the first note that uses both of their hands.  It is found in their fourth recorder piece, which they will play in order to earn their green belts.

Fifth graders had their concert this week!  They did a great job on Monday in front of the school and on Wednesday evening in front of their families.  They should be very proud of all their hard work!
