Thank you to all of the families who came to the Harvest & Harmony Fest to support the Wayne Thomas fifth graders as they performed their drumming piece!
Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper's afternoon class performed a folk dance called "Seven Jumps." Students in the morning class played a singing game that helped them become comfortable singing alone.
Second graders began playing the Orff instruments this week. They began improvising different ways to play the first phrase of "Peas Porridge Hot" on the instruments. Students voted on their favorite, and the winner will become part of our class composition.
Third graders studied the creation of music notation this week. They read a book called Do Re Mi, which told the story of Guido d'Arezzo, who invented the first system of written music notation. They then did an activity where they tried to think like Guido did and invent their own systems of written music. They discovered that it was really quite a difficult process!
Fourth graders began learning how to read the letter names of the notes on the treble clef staff. They will continue working on this for several more classes before taking a written quiz on the material. If your child is looking for extra practice, there is a great note name game linked under the "Fun Music Websites" part of this blog on the right side of the main page. The site is called "Classics for Kids."
Fifth graders learned movements for "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious" this week. They also continued working on their bucket drumming piece, which some of the fifth graders performed in Jens Jensen Park today as a part of the Highland Park Harvest & Harmony Fest. Thank you to those who attended this special event!
