Week of August 29

It was a great first full week at Wayne Thomas!  Keep reading to find out about some of the highlights from your child's music classes.

Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper's morning class reviewed the name song they learned last week.  They also read a story that introduced them to their first two pitches:  sol and mi.  They learned the hand signs for these two pitches.  Sol is the higher pitch, and mi is the lower pitch.  Students in the afternoon class did not have music this week due to the early release on Friday.

First graders sang a welcome song and played seven different unpitched percussion instruments.  They learned the name of each instrument and how to play it.  They worked on playing with proper technique while singing.

Second graders reviewed dynamic levels including piano, forte, crescendo, and decrescendo by playing a singing game.  They also performed a whole lot of different locomotor and stationary movements!

Third graders began learning a song that they will be performing in a canon next week.  There were several words in the song that they didn't know, so they used their inference skills to figure out what the words meant.

Fourth graders performed a group of three partner songs.  They did a nice job holding their own parts while people around them were singing different parts.  They also played a game that helped them focus on being a good ensemble member and working as a team.

Fifth graders learned a song in Farsi and played a game that kids in Iran and Afghanistan traditionally play with the song.  They also learned a South African song.  Both of these songs are very catchy, so you may hear them practicing them at home!
