It was nice to see your children again this week when I returned from my maternity leave! They were in great hands with Mrs. Berg while I was gone, and I look forward to seeing everything they have learned. Read on to find out about some of the highlights from classes this week.
Kindergarteners read a book called Happy Birthday Moon, which helped to teach them about echos. They sang an echo song and did a creative movement activity.
Second graders focused on sight-singing this week. They worked on sight-reading the rhythm of a song, then the solfege pitches on the staff (sol, mi, la), and then adding the words.
Third graders learned about early music notation this week. They discussed the importance of being able to write down songs, and they learned about Guido d'Arezzo, who invented the system of music notation we use today.
Fourth graders reviewed B, A, and G on their recorders. They also played through their first three recorder songs. They are especially focusing on creating a nice tone on their instruments by not blowing too hard. Students should be practicing their home recorders about 5 minutes each night. They should have paper copies of their music, but their songs are also available on the "Recorder Music" section of this blog.
Fifth graders worked on the music for their upcoming concert. Be sure your calendar is marked for this special event on Tuesday, 12/5 at 7pm at Wayne Thomas! Students voted at the end of last year to see what they would like to do for their concert, and most people said they wanted to focus on instruments for their performance. Because of that, December's concert will be mostly instrumental. Each class will be featured playing barred instruments, ukuleles, recorders, and unpitched percussion instruments.
