Arts in Action

On the morning of Tuesday, March 27, students in 1st through 5th grades participated in an entire morning of Arts in Action.  If you are interested in seeing photos from this special event, please see my Twitter account, @ecrutchfield112.

Arts in Action is a biennial event that we host at Wayne Thomas in celebration of Music In Our Schools Month and Youth Art Month, which both take place in March.  The day began with an all-school assembly about the history of rock and roll, presented by the School of Rock.  Following the assembly, students in 1st-5th grades attended three workshops that they selected ahead of time.  (They chose six workshops that sounded interesting to them, and they were assigned to three of them.)  Each workshop was 40 minutes long.

We have fantastic volunteers from the community who donated their time and resources for this special event.  Local participating organizations included: Soul 2 Sole Dance, North Shore School of Dance, The Performer's School, Park District of Highland Park, Rootz, Harbor Lights Theater Company, Music Institute of Chicago, Guitar Center, Heller Nature Center, Botanic Garden, and Sunset Foods.  The 112 Education Foundation very generously provided a Foundation Grant for the ukuleles that were used at the event.

The 19 workshops students attended were: Hip Hop, Boys' Hip Hop, Poms, Ballet, The Broadway Dance Audition, Taekwondo, Rootz Theatre Games & Improv, Musical Theater, Theatre Games, Drum Beatz, Instrument Petting Zoo, Ukulele, Barn Dance, Henna Tattoos, Nature Art, Felt Keychains, Zen Gardens, Drawing & Cartooning, and Tile Prints.

Students seemed to have a great time at this event.  Some of the comments we heard were, "This was the best day of school!" and "Can we do it again tomorrow?"  We hope your child enjoyed this year's Arts in Action!
