Week of August 20

Welcome to the 2018-2019 school year!  We had a great first week at Wayne Thomas.  I plan to update this blog weekly on Fridays throughout the year to tell you a little about what your students are learning in music.  You can also take a look at my Twitter account, @ecrutchfield112, to see pictures from some of the week's music classes.

Kindergarteners have music three times a week this year!  This week, Kindergarten students sang a name song and used their high and low voices to share their names with their classmates.

First graders have music three times a week.  This week, first graders sang a song called "Hi, New Friends," which they developed creative movements to.  They also played unpitched percussion instruments with this song.

Second graders have music three times a week.  This week, they sang a song called "Do You Know My Friends at School?" and began learning a song called "Closet Key."  They will use "Closet Key" to help them review dynamic levels including piano (soft), forte (loud), crescendo (gradually getting louder), and decrescendo (gradually getting softer).

Third graders have music twice a week.  This week, the third graders played a singing game to help them get to know their classmates better.

Fourth graders have music twice a week.  This week, fourth graders sang a song called "Music Keeps Us Singing."  They performed this song in three parts and began to compose movements to go with the song.

Fifth graders have music twice a week.  This week, they learned the history behind a musical called "Newsies."  They will be singing a song from this musical as their first concert piece.  They seemed to really enjoy listening to it!

Please free to contact me with any questions or concerns that may arise at any point during the year.  The best way to reach me is by email: ecrutchfield@nssd112.org.
