Kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students all learned about The Nutcracker this week. They should be able to tell you that Tchaikovsky composed the music for The Nutcracker!
Kindergarteners had a chance to take a look at the "Solami's Solo" section of the music blog this week. They enjoyed singing a song about new ways to play their rhythm sticks. They had lots of great ideas about how to play them!
First graders reviewed Call and Response form with the singing game, "Charlie Over the Ocean." They had fun improvising singing conversations with puppets in the song "Roly Oly Over You Go." They also learned a round called "The First Snow" and worked on singing it in two parts. There were some very creative dancers when they did a movement activity with Vivaldi's "Winter!"
Second graders performed the canon "Icicles" in three groups and composed movements to go along with the text of the song. They also did activities with "March," "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," "Waltz of the Flowers," and "Chinese Dance" from The Nutcracker. They reviewed dynamic levels and major and minor keys with a round called "December Winds," which they will do more with next week!
Third graders finished learning a dance to "I've Been to Harlem" and began working on a set of partner songs consisting of "Snow, Beautiful Snow" and "Over the River and Through the Woods." They will use these pieces to build a composition of their own next week!
Fourth graders had a chance to see the Wayne Thomas Music blog for the first time this week! They also learned high C and high D on the recorder. Most of them are working on their green belts.
Fifth graders learned low E and F# on the recorder this week. Most of them are working on their orange belt music.
Fourth and fifth graders should be continuing to practice their recorders at home.
