Please encourage your students to take a look at the "Spring Sing Song Sheets" section of the blog if they have misplaced any of their lyrics sheets. I have posted the ones students will be learning next week, so they can even look ahead! The files are password protected, but students have been informed of the password. If you have a child in second grade, please have him or her bring a flashlight to music class. See below for more information. Read on to find out a little bit about what each grade level did in music this week!
Kindergarteners learned a new note this week! They played a question and answer singing game called "Lemonade" and discovered that eighth notes go faster than quarter notes. We count eighth notes by clapping and saying "ti-ti."
First graders learned about breath marks, "no breath" marks, ties, fermatas, and double bar lines. They also sang and learned movement for their third Spring Sing song. They began learning the vocal part for their fourth song, too.
Second graders were very excited to learn flashlight choreography for their third Spring Sing song! They also learned their fourth song and learned about what makes rap different than other types of music. They played many of the instrument parts that will be in the Spring Sing, too. Please send a small flashlight to school with your second grader. It should have your child's name on it and will be kept safely in the music room until after the Spring Sing so your student can practice and perform with it. Flashlights that can be kept up off the risers are preferred (small enough to fit in a pocket, attached to a keychain, etc.) Thank you!
Third and fourth graders learned the vocal parts and the movements for their fourth Spring Sing song. This song is contrapuntal, which makes it quite difficult. The students are doing a great job holding their individual parts! Their songs have a LOT of words and sections with three-part harmony, so you should hear them practicing at home!
Fifth graders started their Spring Sing music this week! They were excited to share what they knew about Broadway and then find out things about Broadway that they may not have known before. They began their first two Spring Sing songs, which are very tough. The students are excited because many of them know some of the songs they'll be singing, but one challenge they will face is that they might know a different vocal part than the one they'll be singing!
