Read on to find out a little bit about what each grade level did in music this week!
Kindergarteners had fun playing a singing game called "Closet Key." They distinguished between loud and soft sounds and learned that in music, "forte" is the word we use for loud, and "piano" is the word used for soft. They even did a rhythmic dictation activity as a class using quarter notes and eighth notes!
First graders enjoyed playing many of the instrument parts for their first four Spring Sing songs. They also learned the movement for their fourth song and started working on their fifth song.
Second graders reviewed dynamics including piano, forte, mezzo-piano, mezzo-forte, crescendo, and decrescendo with their fifth Spring Sing song. They also learned instrument parts for some of their other songs. If your child has not brought a small flashlight to school yet, please send one as soon as possible. It should have your second grader's name on it and will be kept safely in the music room until after the Spring Sing so your student can practice and perform with it. Flashlights should be able to be kept in a pocket or attached to a belt loop by a keychain, etc. Thank you!
Third and fourth graders learned the vocal parts and the movements for their fifth Spring Sing song. They have been looking forward to working on this particular song for quite a while, so they were very excited this week! Please have your third or fourth grader bring a small flashlight to school for this song. The flashlight choreography takes a lot of concentration, so the more time they have to practice with their flashlights, the better! Flashlights will be kept safely in the music room until after the Spring Sing, when they will be returned to students. The flashlight should be small, so it can fit in your child's pocket or attach to a belt loop or waistband for the rest of the performance.
Fifth graders learned about George M. Cohan and about an older Broadway show called "Little Johnny Jones." One of their medleys includes "You're a Grand Old Flag," from "George M!" We discussed the fact that their school song was written to the tune of "You're a Grand Old Flag," so some students might find it difficult to sing the original words instead of our Wayne Thomas lyrics!
Happy Chocolate Cheesecake Day on March 6!
