Week of November 1

Don't forget... The Spring Sing dates are now posted on the “Important Dates” page!  We will be having an Arts in Action afternoon this year, too, and that date is posted there, as well.  We are looking for parent volunteers (or people you might know who would be willing to donate their time) to lead arts related activities for our afternoon of Arts in Action.  If you have special skills in any area of the arts, including music, visual art, theatre, or dance and would be willing to lead an activity, please contact Mrs. Crutchfield!

Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper’s afternoon class played hand drums and rhythm sticks along with the story, Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb.  They also sang "Down, Down, Yellow and Brown" while playing the xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels.  Students in the morning Kindergarten class did not have music this week due to the Teacher Institute Day on Tuesday.

First graders did a folk dance called the Shoemaker's Dance.  This dance helped them learn about locomotor and non-locomotor movements and ABC form.  They also learned about Mozart.

Second graders played instruments along with "O Fortuna" from Carl Orff's cantata, Carmina Burana.  Students loved this song!  Several second graders decided that they wanted to create a version using electric guitars.  They also sang and did a creative movement activity with "John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt" and sang and played a game with "Obwisana."

Third graders learned about pickup beats, whole rests, and dotted quarter notes by singing "My Horses Ain't Hungry," "Dide," and "Sweet Potatoes."  They also played an accompaniment to "Sweet Potatoes" on the xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels.

Fourth graders learned to play "G" on their recorders.  They did several activities to reinforce B, A, and G.  They also learned "Hot Cross Buns," which is the song they will be tested on to earn their white belts in Recorder Karate.

Fifth graders learned to play the notes C' and D' on the recorder this week.  They also  began testing for their white belts with "Snake Charmer."  Some students have begun working on the yellow belt song, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight."
