Kindergarteners in the afternoon class sang a song called "Walk to School." They talked about fast and slow music and identified fast and slow sections in "Walking Song" from Acadian Songs and Dances. Students in the morning class did the lesson listed last week.
First graders enjoyed singing and acting out a song called "Little Black Bug" with partners. They also sang a Japanese song called "Kobuta."
Second graders listened to songs of each branch of the military and sang a song called "Welcome Home" in honor of Veteran's Day. They also made a list of things for which they are thankful and figured out what the rhythms of each item on the list would be. They then worked in groups to create four-beat compositions from the list they made. They added movement and performed their patterns.
Third graders learned about musicians in the military, including those in "The President's Own," (musicians in the Marine Corps), "Pershing's Own," (musicians in the Army), "The Airmen of Note" and the "Singing Sergeants" (musicians in the Air Force), the U.S. Navy Band, and the U.S. Coast Guard Band.
Fourth graders have been doing a great job playing "Hot Cross Buns" on their recorders. This is the song they will play in order to earn their white belts. About a third of the fourth grade students have already tested on this song and done very well.
Fifth graders learned to play low D on their recorders this week. They worked very hard on the song for their yellow belts, "The Lion Sleeps Tonight." Most students have earned their white belts and are currently working on the yellow belt song.
Saturday, November 13 is World Kindness Day.
Have a great (and kind!) weekend!
