There will be no school next week on Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. Enjoy the extra family time! Find out what your child learned in Music this week by reading below.
Kindergarteners in the afternoon class reviewed the four voices and began learning about the Orff instruments. They learned that xylophones have bars made of wood, metallophones have large metal bars, and glockenspiels have tiny metal bars. They also used the phrase "Low is left and long" to help them identify high and low pitches on the instruments. Students in the morning class did not have music this week due to Friday's early release.
Second graders performed the song that they composed on the Orff instruments this week as a playing assessment. They worked very hard on this. They worked together to coach one another and provide positive feedback about each other's playing.
Third graders studied early music notation this week. They read a book about how music first started being written down. Mrs. Hettich's class and Mrs. Lippe's class worked on an activity where they made up their own creative systems of musical notation. They really had to think outside the box for this!
Fourth graders have now all taken their note name quizzes. Mr. Bush's class and Mrs. Munson's class were very excited to receive their recorders this week! Mrs. Silberman's class will get theirs during their next music class, on Monday, October 17. Students in Mr. Bush's class should be practicing the fingering for "B" at home. Students in Mrs. Munson's class and Mrs. Silberman's class should not be playing at home quite yet!
Fifth graders sang and danced to the 2014 FIFA World Cup theme song this week. Students REALLY like this song! It is very repetitive, which made it pretty easy to learn. It combines important elements of pop music with the Brazilian Bossa Nova style, and students are having lots of fun singing it!
