Week of January 3

We had a great first week back!  On the last day before break, students participated in a ROAR celebration during lunch and recess.  This was an event to celebrate students' positive choices.  Students worked really hard to make LOTS of "snowballs" and then played in the "snow" in the gym during recess.  1st-3rd graders watched a snowman movie during lunch, and 4th & 5th graders listened to music.  Watch this video to see the fun!

Kindergarteners learned the piano is the music word for quiet, and forte is the music word for loud.  They sang a song and played instruments both piano and forte.  They did a nice job!

First graders learned about Carl Orff's "O Fortuna" from his cantata, "Carmina Burana" this week.  They really liked this song.  They also began studying call and response form by playing a singing game that is in call and response form.

Second graders reviewed all of the words describing dynamics that they know, and then they learned some new ones (mezzo piano, mezzo forte, crescendo, and decrescendo).  They learned about macrobeat (big beat) and microbeat (small beat) by playing a game with a song called "Miss Sue."

Third graders began learning a song called "Dance for the Nations," which they will be recorded singing next week.  They really focused on singing with proper vocal technique.  They also learned two new music notes: the dotted quarter note and the sixteenth notes.

Fourth graders learned about a game called Joytunes that they can play on the computers to help them with their recorders.  Students can get to the game here.  (There is additional information about it on the "Recorder Music" section of this blog.)

Fifth graders learned a body percussion piece this week.  They were a bit overwhelmed by the song when it was first presented to them, but they soon discovered that by breaking it down into smaller parts, they were able to learn it quite quickly.  They are in the process of creating their own compositions using the parts in the song.
