Week of February 13

We had a great week at Wayne Thomas!  Students enjoyed celebrating Valentine's Day on Tuesday.  They were also VERY excited to get outside for recess in the warmer weather!  Keep reading to find out about what they learned in Music.

Kindergarteners in Ms. Tepper's morning class sang a song called "Grizzly Bear."  This song helped them to review piano (soft) and forte (loud).  They enjoyed playing a game with this song, as well.  Students in the afternoon class did not have Music this week due to Friday's early release.

First graders studied percussion instruments this week.  They learned that there are pitched and unpitched percussion instruments, and they listened to the percussion section of Benjamin Britten's "The Young Person's Guide to the Orchestra."

Second graders played a singing game called "Red Rover."  This game helped them practice identifying the pitches do, re, mi, sol, and la on the staff.  They also read a book called Bear's Loose Tooth and performed parts of this story using Orff instruments, tambourines, and rhythm sticks.  Take a look at Mrs. Crutchfield's Twitter account (@ecrutchfield112) to see some pictures from this activity!  (You can access the Twitter account from the main page of this music blog and clicking on "Follow" on the left side of the page.)

Third and fourth graders learned their third concert song this week.  They now know the singing for the first three songs, and they know the movements for the first two songs.  You should hear them practicing these songs at home each night!

Fifth graders continued playing recorders this week.  Students are doing a nice job of helping one another in this unit.  We have many great leaders in fifth grade, and they are really shining as they coach their peers.
