I will be available during conferences from 12-8pm next week on Monday and Tuesday. Feel free to stop by to discuss your child's progress in music this fall!
Kindergarteners played a Thanksgiving singing game this week. They were very excited to play tubanos, a type of African drum, as well.
First graders created a list of things they are thankful for. Some of the things on their lists included family, friends, home, food, school, teachers, religion, and toys. They then figured out how to write the rhythms of these words using quarter notes or eighth notes. They worked in groups to compose Thanksgiving rhythms that included a total of four beats. Some groups performed their rhythms on instruments, as well.
Second graders studied Franz Joseph Haydn's "Surprise Symphony" this week. They really enjoyed this piece of music and were very interested in the history behind the composition.
Third graders read a book called When I First Came to This Land and sang a song of the same name. They discovered that the composer selected specific instruments to play the various parts of the song based on the timbre of the instruments.
Fourth graders did well with their recorder music this week. At this point, every 4th grader has earned his white belt. Most have earned their yellow belts, some have earned their orange belts, and a few have even earned their green belts. They are not expected to practice their songs over Thanksgiving break, but some students choose to use this as a time to soar ahead in their music.
Fifth graders were very excited to begin practicing their concert music with the microphones this week. Many students have speaking parts or singing solos, so developing proper microphone technique is important to ensure they will be heard in the performance.
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns: ecrutchfield@nssd112.org.
