We had a great week back at Wayne Thomas! See below to find out about some of the things your child learned in music this week.
Kindergarteners learned their first two music notation symbols this week. They learned that a quarter note gets one beat of sound and is counted by clapping and saying "ta," and a quarter rest gets one beat of silence and is counted by saying "shh." They applied these new symbols as they sang and played a song called "Kitty Cat" on the metallophones and glockenspiels.
First graders were excited to play Boomwhackers this week. These colorful tubes are different sizes and create different pitches. They discovered that the larger the Boomwhacker, the lower the pitch. Smaller Boomwhackers have higher pitches. They sang and played a song using these instruments.
Second graders sang and performed movements with a song called "Yummy Pumpkin Pie." They also played six different unpitched percussion instruments with this piece.
Third graders read a book called Barn Dance and analyzed a piece of music called "Square Dance 101." They recognized many of the music symbols in this piece and worked hard to follow along with the song. They enjoyed learning some simple square dance movements, as well.
Fourth graders continue to work hard on their recorder music. Several students have said they need to purchase new recorders for home because either their home recorders are lost or broken. If your child needs a new instrument to practice with at home, please send $3.50 for the new instrument.
Fifth graders continue to do a nice job with their concert music, both in class and during recess rehearsals. Your child should have brought home an information sheet this week with details about the concert. Please note that the concert begins at 6:00, which is a change from previous years.
As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or concerns: ecrutchfield@nssd112.org.
