Week of August 19

Welcome to the 2019-2020 School Year!  We have an outstanding year planned for your children.  Concert and Informance dates will be sent home with students soon, so be sure to mark them on your calendars!  They will also be published on the "Important Dates" section of this blog.  All students will participate in "Arts in Action" this year!  Arts in Action is a special event that takes place every other year to celebrate the arts at Wayne Thomas.  Students will attend three arts-related workshops during the school day at this event in March.

This blog will continue to be the primary means of communication between the music class and home.  Please subscribe to receive weekly updates about what your child is learning in music.  If you ever have any questions or concerns about your child's experience in music, please feel free to contact me: ecrutchfield@nssd112.org.  Keep reading to learn about some of the highlights from your child's first music classes of the year!

Kindergarteners sang a name song this week.  They also enjoyed playing hand drums and triangles to the high and low sounds in "Good Day Song."

First graders created movements to a song called "Hi, New Friends."  They used seven different unpitched percussion instruments to play the steady beat with this song.

Second graders played a singing game called "Closet Key" this week.  This helped them to review the different dynamic levels.  They also did a rhythmic dictation activity with this song.

Third graders began learning a song called "Down at the Station" this week.  They used boomwhackers to accompany their singing.  They are working on remembering that their voices should always be heard over the instruments.

Fourth graders sang a song called "Music Keeps Us Singing" this week.  This is a partner song with three different parts, so they worked on holding their own parts while their classmates sang different parts.

Fifth graders were excited to start learning the first song for their concert this week.  At the end of their fourth grade year, they voted on what they wanted the theme of their concert to be, and there was an overwhelming majority who picked Disney on Broadway!

We will have a great year together!
