Week of September 3

Find out what your child learned in music this week by reading below.

Kindergarteners played a singing game called "Apple Tree."  They also worked on differentiating between objects and songs that had a beat or no beat.  They performed a beginning of year pre-assessment to find out what they already know.  They will take the same music assessment at the end of the year to see what they have learned throughout Kindergarten.

First graders played a singing game called "Bounce High."  They learned to read two new symbols: the accent mark and the repeat sign.  They also did a short study of Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's "Flight of the Bumblebee."  First graders performed a beginning of year pre-assessment to find out what they already know.  They will take the same music assessment at the end of the year to see what they have learned throughout first grade.

Second graders began learning a spoken song this week.  They worked on identifying the difference between the steady beat, rhythm, and a body percussion ostinato.  They focused on holding their own parts while classmates were performing different parts.  Second graders also performed a beginning of year pre-assessment to find out what they already know.  They will take the same music assessment at the end of the year to see what they have learned throughout second grade.

Third graders played two different instrument parts using the xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels.  They are working on holding their own parts while classmates are performing different instrument parts.

Fourth graders enjoyed singing and dancing a folk dance called "Down the River."  They used stationary and locomotor movements in this dance.  Students especially enjoyed creating their own locomotor movements during the "B" section of the song.

Fifth graders learned the movements for "Hakuna Matata" and started singing "Part of Your World" this week.  Students are really enjoying learning about the differences between the Disney movies and the Broadway musicals.  They should be practicing their Concert Music each night.
